I use this drive to clone my laptop hard drive as to avoid losing data in the event of a crash. I find cloning works better than a simple back up. If your hard drive fails you can get up and running just by exchanging the drives.

I had purchased this hard drive to replace the original Seagate in my Dell Inspiron laptop, but would have been much better off getting a Western Digital. The first one was dead out of the box, so I was able to get a new replacement which worked for about six months, then died. After waiting almost two weeks for a replacement from Hitachi, they gave me a refurb unit which made more noise than my refrigerator! So... I called for yet another replacement and it's making the same obnoxious noises. At this point, the drive does in fact work, but I need to wear earplugs when using my laptop. I plan on purchasing a Western Digital this week as I've had enough headaches dealing with Hitachi. At least if a WD goes dead, they will send you a replacement immediately and have you send the old one back instead of being without a computer for weeks on end!

I bought this hard drive to replace a 250 GB, 5400 rpm drive that came in my 15" MacBook Pro. My system felt nearly twice as fast on openning and closing applications. Boot-up time has also decreased. This drive is slightly louder than my previous drive, but still very quiet. I have not noticed any difference in battery life.
This drive was working great, but seemed to get slower over time, the just failed after a few months of use. The 500GB version, which I have in another computer seems the better way to go.
